Allapattah is a heavily Hispanic neighborhood in Miami Florida whose name comes from the Seminole Indian language word alligator. In the later 1950s a large migration of black Americans were displaced by the construction of Interstate 95 and their arrival in Allapattah resulted in many of its white residents relocating to the suburbs of Miami Dade County and Broward County. In addition, Allapattah’s demographics were largely affected by the Cuban Revolution of 1959 and an influx of Cuban refugees, making Allapattah one of the largest Cuban American populations in the city. In later years different immigrant groups arrives, including Dominicans, Hondurans, Nicaraguans, and Haitians, as each one of their home countries experienced one sort of crisis or another. Allapattah is one of Miami’s true melting pots.

Allapattah is northwest of downtown, and about five miles east of Miami International Airport.
